Seed Pod
(Cast glass, slumped glass, wrought iron)

This piece was part of a commission for the roof garden of the new cancer ward at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford in 2008.

Seed Pod
, as the name suggests, is based on a germinating seed - with its inherent associations of protection, support and renewal.

The main body is made from lead crystal, which was cast from an original clay model. The  outer shell casings are made from sheet glass which was slumped over a mould. The wrought ironwork (created for me by blacksmith Gaz Hodgetts) represents the shoots of new growth, bursting forth.
